HAPPINESS AS AN EDUCATION GOAL
With the start of each academic year, the debates on the quality of the education system are renewed and recurrent themes such as the desirability or not of the duties are resurfaced; the level of language teaching; failure in math or the overload of the children's day by the accumulation of class hours and extracurricular activities. Often it seems that we are looking for the impossible: a teaching that forms in an integral way but that is competitive; that transmits values rooted in our social and cultural roots but is adjusted to a world in continuous change; to educate happy children but make them aware of the challenges of today's world ...

It is worth listening to the Ted talk given in 2013 by Logan LaPlante, an American teenager who was then 13 years old and had been educated from 9 out of the school system, at home, under the tutelage of his parents. In his talk, Logan quotes pedagogues who have already appeared in this blog, such as Roger Walsh or Sir Ken Robinson, and, as the former does, regrets that the education system is oriented to how to earn a living instead of how to have a happy life. Logan values in his talk elements such as contact with nature, responsibility towards the community, creativity, physical exercise.

Two years after this talk, Logan's parents re-enrolled him in a school with a flexible educational project, where classroom attendance is not mandatory and most of the work can be resolved online. Because in their opinion the debate does not revolve around an "educational system", but what is needed is to change "the attitude" around education, so that it is always at the service of young people, and not to the reverse. At age fifteen, Logan's parents valued the need for more continued contact with teenagers his age, who could appreciate the opportunity to go to college ... In the end, flexibility seems to be one of the key words if we really want to make changes in the way we educate our children.

PASSIVHAUS: LESSER ENERGY CONSUMPTION, BETTER LIFE QUALITY
Seville will host next November the 9th edition of the Passivhaus Conference, focused on the design of buildings with almost zero energy consumption. The passivhaus system emerged in 1988 from the studies of professors Bo Adamson (University of Lund, Sweden) and Wolfgang Feist of the German Institute of Building and Environment. Both developed a quality standard that sought to reduce the energy consumption of homes by 70%. To do this they opted for solar energy for air conditioning, improve insulation to prevent heat loss, ensure indoor air quality and leakage control. The good reception of this proposal led to the creation of the Passivhaus Institute in Darmstadt, to control the good implementation of the method. After the first buildings in Germany and Austria, the passivhaus standard has been spreading throughout the EU and has also reached the US.

The program to be debated in Seville will feature the presentation of practical cases of rehabilitation or housing construction; will also address the problems of the classrooms, following the effects of the heat wave last summer in many centers in Spain, which were forced to suspend classes, and will present the case of a hotel of 150 rooms built in accordance with these energy-saving standards.

At As Salgueiras, we are following with interest all the issues related to greater energy efficiency and sustainable consumption. In addition, the passivhaus method relies on wood as a sustainable, renewable building element, which allows heating the house with ease while keeping that heat for a long time. Wood and low energy consumption will undoubtedly be two key points for the architecture of the immediate future.
