VILLAGES FOR THE XXI CENTURY
We’ve
really been taken by the initiative of the socially conscious company: Senderos de Teja. Founded five years ago by a group of young urban professionals, this
company is dedicated to providing added value to natural resources and to the business
possibilities that are present in the small villages of Aragon, especially
those with an aging population and on the verge of disappearing. In Calcena (with
only 20 residents), they have rehabilitated a municipal hostel and have
consolidated a sports-tourism offer with 300 natural rock-climbing walls that
are dully signalized. In Trasobares they have again activated the camping site,
and last year they were also in charge of the management of the
interpretation center of the Moncayo Natural Park.
The philosophy of the group starts with respect for the people and their traditions. The possibilities of business are evaluated according to modern criteria. "I am sick and tired of hearing that life in the village is equivalent to livestock or agriculture. There are a thousand options, as many jobs as you can do online, because living in a village is not living in the last century," says one of the founding members of the group. And priority is given to the value of the landscape and natural resources as sources of income and quality tourism, which respect the environment and help to spread the message. Many of those responsible for the projects have moved their residence to the municipalities in the area, which have seen the tendency for depopulation to be reversed for the first time in many years. Some break the mold with their work, like a psychologist who passes home consultations, as a postmodern and specialized version of the lifelong doctor who came in mule to visit his/her patients. A review of this website reveals that, far from utopian visions and the embrace of radical primitivism, it is possible for technology and traditions to go hand in hand to guarantee a new future for many small villages in the 21st century.
