KVARNBACKEN'S BENCHES
When
we test a park, we repair in the quality or adequacy of installed
modules, green areas, vegetable species, its extension, the design
of its play areas ... but sometimes we forget to what extent urban
furniture is not only a
relevant factor but a crucial element in the promotion of socialization
and the generation of interaction dynamics among its users. The
Kalejdohill project in Sweden is based on the importance of
street furniture as a key element in regenerating depressed urban areas.
Before
the construction of some 800 houses in the area of
Järfälla, near Stockholm, the local authorities decided to start the
project working on the design of the Kvarnbacken park, which dominates
the surroundings. And they commissioned the designer Felix Burrichter to coordinate a team of designers, which proposed different models of banks under the sole starting point
that all of them should foster dialogue, interaction between
neighbors and the creation of spaces for coexistence.
The result is a review of all the possible typologies of the urban bank. In some cases traditional forms and models are rebuild with new materials; in others, they take to the outside forms as the one of armchairs of the domestic space; in
some cases the bench curves and becomes a sort of grandstand that gives
character of stage or small amphitheater to the space that is situated
in front; and there are also the minimalist design exercises that reduce the piece to a simple curved tube. The
votes of future neighbors will decide, after some time, which models
are installed and which are removed, meanwhile, the Kvarnbacken park has
become a sample of quality urban design and an element of reflection
about Of
all that it means to sit in a park to read, to rest, to watch the
children play, to talk to neighbors ... because the well-designed urban
furniture is the perfect excuse for strangers to become neighbors.
